How to get the most out of microdosing mushrooms

Today, I’m going to talk about setting up your day to get the most out of your microdosing experience. Anybody whose microdosed willy-nilly has likely run into incidents where it feels like instead of elevating our moods or increasing our focus that our experience instead on a microdose feels like a negative mood state has been instigated or amplified. This of course is counter to the promise of microdosing which promises X, Y, Z. We know the list. We can get to it a little bit later. In other words. There is a right way to microdose and there is a wrong way and doing it the right way will increase your likelihood of having a positive outcome as intended.

Before we begin, I just want to say that not every day is a microdosing day. And specifically when I refer to microdosing I’m speaking primarily of my experience microdosing psilocybin mushrooms. With that out of the way, here are five tips for structuring your day for an ideal microdosing experience.

Tip #1 - Meditate before Microdosing

Tip number one is to meditate before microdosing. First thing in the morning before I take my microdose, I make sure to do about 10 to 15 minutes of meditation. Nothing fancy. Just my daily meditation practice to ground myself into the present moment. Following that, I like to write in my gratitude journal. Gratitude is another practice for promoting mindfulness. Whatever trains of thoughts had ailed me up until this point. I can release myself from with the practice of gratitude and one of my favorite saying goes and I can’t even remember the source, but it goes like this, “You can’t be grateful and upset at the same time“, which is so, so true.

Tip #2 - Set your Intention

Tip number 2, set your intention. People microdose for various different reasons, whether it is to promote flow states to promote higher levels of creative thinking or for the alleviation of certain ailments including anxiety and depression. Whatever your intention, it is important to set it before you take your microdose. Setting your intention is crucial for getting the most out of your microdosing protocol. It allows you to align your protocol with tasks and activities that can be enhanced with microdosing. For example, you might want to consider microdosing on days in which you have more of a varied schedule. So perhaps on days in which you have a project-based task to work on during the day and an evening workout or a social function in the evening. Anything in which you would normally feel a little bit uncomfortable in, would be a good good scenario for microdosing. Fun fact, some of my most fruitful therapy sessions have happened on days in which I microdose.

Tip #3 - Remove Distractions

Tip number three, remove distractions and unintentional stress-inducing triggers. Mindfulness when practice prior to taking your microdose can be great for kick starting you off into a positive grounded experience. However, stressful situations that can arise later on in the day can quickly shift your state of mind into another direction. My tip for dealing with these stressful situations is to do your best to avoid them altogether. So for example, on days that I microdose, I minimize my use of my phone I stay off social media, I reserve my errands for non-microdosing days and I don’t drive, especially because I live in downtown Vancouver. And anybody who’s been to downtown Vancouver knows that driving here is a gong show.

Tip #4 - If there is something heavy on your mind, wait.

Tip number four, if there is an issue on your mind that is currently weighing on you, either save your microdose for a later date for until you’ve processed your issue, or be prepared to reorient your intention of the day altogether.

The thing about magic mushrooms is that it has an ability to take you where your subconscious mind wants to go and to bring whatever it is that you’re thinking about to the forefront of your consciousness. If this happens to you on your microdose, be prepared. If your original intention of the day was to, let’s say be productive on a project, but suddenly you find yourself really facing this issue that you have looming over you, head on, then embrace it.

I’ve learned the hard way many times that my microdose is not to be treated like an Ambien pill or like the ADHD medications I’ve been prescribed in the past. I don’t get to use my microdose to quiet my subconscious mind or to tell it to shut up for the time being, but in fact when I have unintentionally found myself working through difficult issue while being on a microdose. In the moment, it almost certainly does not feel like a positive experience and there’s also a layer of me being resistant to the experience. Like, what the heck? This wasn’t my intention. Once I get through it, I’m always always grateful that it happened because there’s a quote Carl Jung and it is so so true.

So if you find yourself having an unintended spiritual experience on your microdose, I just say embrace it and let it happen and learn as much as you can from it, or you can try to stave off that kind of scenario by working through your grievances while not on a microdose and see what happens then.

Tip #5 - Keep a journal

Tip number five, keep a journal at the end of the day. There is a marketing adage and it goes, “you can’t optimize what you don’t keep track of“, and this is so true because microdosing at the end of the day is a personal journey. It can be really helpful to keep a journal at the end of the day to log and reflect on your experiences of the day. And of course, with any journaling practice, one of the most rewarding things to do is to go back and to look at your progress and see it in a tangible way.

So those are my five tips for structuring your day for an ideal microdosing experience. To my prospective and current microdosers out there, I hope you found this article to be helpful.
